By NCVC Staff | Published on Sep 20, 2023
A loose vagina can be a concern for many women, especially after regular sex and childbirth. Instead of worrying about whether it’s a myth or not, why not focus on activities that can help keep your vaginal muscles tighter and stronger?
We spoke to Dr. Swetha M.P, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospital in Bengaluru, who shared some tips for vaginal tightening. Let’s dive in!
Is a Loose Vagina Permanent?
When it comes to vaginal health, there are a lot of myths and misconceptions. One common topic that isn’t discussed enough is vaginal elasticity. Some people believe that vaginas can lose their elasticity permanently, but this isn’t true at all.
According to Dr. Swetha, “Your vagina is elastic and can stretch or shrink to accommodate different situations. Events like pregnancy can affect its stretchability, but just like any other muscle, it can expand and retract. Nothing will cause your vagina to become permanently ‘loose.'”
Causes Behind a Loose Vagina
Over time, several factors can contribute to a loose vagina:
-
Age: As you age, the muscles and tendons in your pelvic floor can become weaker, resulting in a loose vagina. You may also experience urine leakage, pelvic pain, and discomfort during sex.
-
Childbirth: During pregnancy and childbirth, your body undergoes significant changes to accommodate and deliver a baby. The muscles and walls of the vaginal canal expand to make room, which can lead to a weaker and looser vagina.
-
Other Factors: Multiple childbirths, traumatic injuries, health conditions, and menopause can also contribute to a loose vagina.
Can Your Vagina Get Loose from Too Much Sex?
Let’s debunk a common myth: frequent sex or lack of it will not cause your vagina to change. Many people believe that too much sex can result in a loose vagina, but that’s simply not true.
The Benefits of Vaginal Tightening
Vaginal tightening offers several benefits. It can improve symptoms of vaginal atrophy and dryness, enhance stress-related urinary incontinence, and reduce pain during intercourse. Dr. Swetha explains, “Vaginal tightening decreases friction during intercourse and reduces any discomfort.”
5 Ways to Tighten Your Vagina
If you’re looking to strengthen and tone your vaginal muscles, exercise is key. Here are five exercises that specifically target your vaginal muscles:
1. Kegel Exercises
Kegel exercises are a great way to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. To perform them, identify your pelvic floor muscles and then clench and release them to build strength and tighten your vagina.
2. Pelvic Tilt Exercise
The pelvic tilt exercise strengthens your vaginal and abdominal muscles. Stand with your shoulders and butt against a wall, then pull your belly button towards your spine. Hold this position for at least 4 seconds before releasing.
3. Squats
Combining squats with kegel exercises is an effective way to tone your pelvic area and tighten your vaginal muscles. Stand with your legs stretched and hips turned out, then lower yourself as if sitting on a bench. Repeat this movement several times. Squats can also help give you a rounder butt. For an extra challenge, try doing squats with weights (dumbbells) in your hands.
4. Legs Up Exercise
An excellent exercise for tightening the vagina and strengthening the pelvic muscles is the legs up exercise. Simply raise your legs against a wall. You can perform this exercise in the morning before getting out of bed.
5. Yoga
Yoga asanas assist in contracting and expanding the pelvic floor muscles. Practicing poses like Titli Asana, Prasarita Padottanasana, Chakrasana, and Supta Vajrasana can promote vaginal health and help tighten your vagina. According to Dr. Swetha, yoga poses that involve the pelvis can be particularly beneficial.
Remember, a loose vagina is not a permanent condition, and there are ways to maintain its strength and tightness. By following these exercises and tips, you can take care of your vaginal health and feel more confident.
