While there are various causes, including cold weather and allergies, did you know that the food you eat can also play a role in aggravating or calming your symptoms? Nutritionist Dr. Lovneet Batra recommends steering clear of certain foods if you suffer from sinusitis. Let’s take a closer look at these seven culprits.

    Yogurt: A Surprising Trigger

    Yogurt might be a gut-friendly snack, but when it comes to sinusitis, it’s best to skip it. Consumption of yogurt can increase phlegm production, leading to worsened congestion. If you still want to include yogurt in your diet, Dr. Batra suggests avoiding it at night.

    Bananas: Not Always a Healthy Choice

    You might be surprised to learn that bananas can actually worsen congestion. They have the potential to increase phlegm production, particularly during the winter months. Dr. Batra advises sinusitis patients to refrain from eating bananas at night, as it can lead to nasal clogging and breathlessness.

    Rice: It’s All About the Combination

    Dr. Batra emphasizes that the impact of rice on sinusitis depends on what it is paired with. If consumed with yogurt, rice can increase inflammation. However, when paired with ghee and dal, it has anti-inflammatory properties. To minimize adverse effects, it is recommended to consume rice during the daytime.

    Wine: A Culprit for Congestion

    While indulging in a glass of wine might seem tempting, it’s important to be aware that alcohol triggers the release of histamine in the body. This release can result in increased congestion and heightened sinus symptoms.

    Tomatoes: An Inflammatory Trigger

    Tomatoes can contribute to inflammation, although the extent varies from person to person. Dr. Batra advises arthritis patients to especially avoid raw tomatoes, as they can exacerbate inflammation.

    Red Meat: A Protein-Rich Problem

    Protein-rich foods like red meat can contribute to mucus accumulation in the body, worsening congestion and existing sinus symptoms. It is advisable to exercise caution when consuming red meat if you have sinusitis.

    Amla: Not for Sinus Sufferers

    While amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is rich in nutrients, it may not be suitable for individuals with sinusitis. Dr. Batra has observed that many patients experience throat itching and worsened congestion after consuming amla or amla juice. The sourness of this superfood is the likely culprit.

    To alleviate sinus symptoms, Dr. Batra recommends indulging in warm herbal teas, soups, and other comforting hot foods. Coconut oil, ginger tea or juice, and honey are also effective in reducing the body’s inflammatory response.
