Staying glued to your phone can make your skin go lifeless

By Emily Hagan | Published on Oct 18, 2023

We all want that coveted glass skin – the kind that glows and radiates health. We try everything from home hacks to expensive skincare products, hoping to achieve it. But what if those dark circles persist and your complexion remains pale? The issue might lie elsewhere, and you won’t like it – your smartphone could be the culprit. Surprising as it may sound, according to a skin expert, excessive use of mobile phones can have a negative impact on your skin.

When you use your mobile phone excessively, you expose yourself to harmful radiofrequency (RF) fields emitted by the device. These rays, as you might expect, aren’t good for your skin. Let’s dive into the science – these radiations are actually electromagnetic rays. In essence, the more your skin is exposed to your smartphone, the more damage you are doing.

Dr. Sravya. C. Tipirneni, a consultant dermatologist and cosmetologist at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, explains that while we can’t ignore or reduce our dependency on mobile phones for social media presence, communication, or other purposes, it’s crucial to acknowledge the less-known but significant effects they can have on our skin.

5 Skin Issues Caused by Excessive Mobile Phone Use

    1. Dermatitis

Dermatitis is a term used to describe skin inflammation. It manifests as redness, itchiness, rashes, blisters, or flaking, depending on the cause. Cell phone radiations can exacerbate allergies and accelerate antigens in individuals already prone to allergies. Moreover, the presence of nickel and cobalt in phone trimmings can also lead to skin dermatitis when combined with radiation.

    2. Crow’s Feet

Ever heard of crow’s feet? These are the branching wrinkles that typically form at the outer corner of the eye. They earned their name due to their resemblance to a bird’s footprint. Prolonged gazing at mobile screens and continuous downward staring can lead to the formation of wrinkles around the eyes and neck. The small font size and reduced brightness on screens further exacerbate the problem.

    3. Wrinkled Neck

Staring down at your phone for extended periods can cause wrinkles on the neck, which is an early sign of aging. The constant downward gaze gradually damages the collagen in the neck, resulting in neck wrinkles.

    4. Dark Circles

Dark circles are a well-known consequence of excessive smartphone usage. The blue light emitted by cell phones disrupts our sleeping patterns. The less sleep we get, the higher the chances of developing eye bags and dark circles under our eyes.

    5. Skin Allergies and Acne

Here’s some news for you – studies have found that mobile phones harbor a significant amount of bacteria and germs. In fact, experts claim that mobile phones are more unhygienic than public toilets. Think about it – our phones come into contact with countless surfaces throughout the day, transferring tiny germs to our skin without us even realizing it. This can result in allergies and acne.

To avoid these skin problems, the solution is quite simple – reduce your mobile phone usage.

Tips to Protect Your Skin and Reduce Smartphone Use

    • Avoid prolonged gazing at your phone screens.
    • Refrain from using your mobile phone before bedtime.
    • Clean your phone regularly throughout the day using sanitizers or alcohol swabs.
    • Don’t use your phone when it overheats, as this can reduce melanin production and lead to uneven skin tone and dark spots.
    • Pay attention to skin issues on the side of your face that is in contact with the phone.

So before you spend a fortune on expensive skin treatments and products, consider whether your smartphone might be the culprit damaging your skin. Take control and make a conscious effort to reduce your screen time. Your skin will thank you later.
