    What’s the Optimal Water Intake?

    According to Lovneet, the ideal quantity may vary, but consuming 8 to 12 glasses of water is a must. To start your day on the right foot, she recommends hydrating yourself as soon as you wake up. However, simply sipping plain water may not be as effective. You can enhance your hydration by adding lemon, salt, and a touch of sugar to maintain your electrolyte levels.

    Take the “Pee Test” to Find Your Limit

    You might think that drinking excessive water will make you healthier, but according to our expert, overhydrating can have fatal consequences. So, how do you know when enough is enough? It’s simple — just check the color of your urine.

    Dr. Lovneet explains:

    1. Dark-colored urine indicates dehydration, signaling the need to increase your water intake.

    2. If your urine is clear, you are overhydrated and should slow down. Overhydration can exert pressure on your bladder and lead to hyponatremia, a condition where sodium levels drop dangerously low. Sodium is essential for maintaining blood pressure, and a significant decrease can cause nausea, dizziness, and other complications.

    3. Light yellow urine indicates that your water levels are well-balanced and you’re on the right track.

    “The quantity of water you need may not vary significantly, even when you’re indoors. Your body still sweats, loses moisture as water vapor, and when you exercise, you lose water and sodium. Therefore, you must replenish your body accordingly,” adds Lovneet.

    Top Up Your Fluid Levels

    Summer is the perfect time to indulge in fruits and vegetables that are water-rich. Lovneet recommends incorporating muskmelon, watermelon, ghiya (bottle gourd), tori (ridged gourd), cucumber, buttermilk, and sweet lime into your diet.

    Additionally, here are a few essential tips from Lovneet:

    • Sit down while drinking water to aid better absorption.
    • Avoid gulping water down in one go; sip it slowly and steadily.
    • Refrain from drinking water with your meals as it can dilute the digestive juices.
    • Consume water half an hour before your meals for optimal digestion.
