Know why eating onions might be the sweetest thing for diabetics!

By NCVC Staff | Published on Sep 21, 2023

India is known as the ‘diabetes capital of the world’, but it is also a treasure trove of home remedies, or as we say in Hindi, ‘dadi ke nuskhe’, which can be effective in combating this lifestyle disease. During a conversation with my mother about diabetes, I was pleasantly surprised when she mentioned that consuming onions is an effective home remedy to control blood sugar levels.

Intrigued by this revelation, I decided to delve deeper and stumbled upon numerous studies supporting the claim. Let’s explore the benefits of onions for diabetics.

The Power of Onions for Diabetics

    1. Regulating Blood Sugar Levels

Onions contain flavonoids and sulfur compounds, which have been found to have blood sugar-lowering properties. These compounds help regulate insulin levels and improve glucose metabolism, making them particularly beneficial for people with diabetes.

A study published in the National Library of Medicine in 2011 found that consuming onion extract for four weeks significantly reduced fasting blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Another study discovered that daily consumption of raw onions reduced blood sugar levels in people with type 1 diabetes.

    2. Promoting Heart Health

Maintaining good heart health is crucial for people with diabetes, as they are at a higher risk of developing heart disease. Onions are rich in antioxidants, especially quercetin, which has a protective effect on the heart.

Research also reveals that consuming onions can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, both of which are risk factors for heart disease. In a study, individuals with type 2 diabetes who consumed 100 grams of onions daily for eight weeks experienced a significant reduction in their blood pressure levels.

    3. Boosting Immune Function

People with diabetes are more susceptible to infections, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a strong immune system. Onions are packed with vitamin C and other antioxidants, which can bolster the immune system and protect against infections.

A study published in ResearchGate found that regular consumption of onions can improve immune function and reduce the risk of infections, particularly in older adults.

    4. Aiding Weight Loss

Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for individuals with diabetes, as excess weight can worsen the condition. Fortunately, onions are low in calories and high in fiber, promoting satiety and reducing overall calorie intake.

Studies have shown that incorporating onions into your diet can help reduce body weight and improve body composition, especially for individuals with obesity.

    5. Supporting Digestive Health

People with diabetes are more prone to digestive issues such as constipation and gastroparesis. Onions are rich in prebiotic fiber, which nourishes beneficial gut bacteria and enhances digestive function.

The same study mentioned earlier also found that consuming onions can improve digestive function and reduce symptoms of constipation in older adults.

Overall, incorporating onions into your diet can provide a range of health benefits for people with diabetes. So, the next time you’re cooking, don’t forget to add some onions to your dish!
