Here’s how you can clean your sex toys to avoid infection

By NCVC Staff | Published on Sep 23, 2023

When it comes to personal hygiene, we prioritize keeping ourselves, our rooms, and our laundry clean. But what about our sex toys? Surprisingly, many people overlook the importance of keeping their sex toys clean, despite the fact that they come into contact with some of the most sensitive parts of our bodies. An unclean sex toy can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria and pathogens, posing serious risks to our health.

Let’s face it, sex toys are meant to be enjoyable, but an unhygienic toy is an open invitation for unpleasant infections. From UTIs and yeast infections to fungal infections and bacterial vaginosis, using a dirty sex toy can lead to a whole host of health issues.

If you’ve ever experienced vaginal burning, curdy discharge, or a foul odor, you know firsthand how miserable it can make your life. That’s why it’s crucial to take the time to properly clean your sex toys.

But before you jump into cleaning mode, there are a few things you need to consider:

    Checking the Material

First and foremost, pay close attention to the material your sex toy is made of. Here are a couple of things to consider:

    1. Porous vs. Non-Porous

It’s best to avoid porous sex toys because no matter how diligently you clean them, there’s still a high chance that some bacteria will remain. Instead, opt for non-porous materials like PVC, silicone, or steel, which are not only safer but also easier to disinfect.

    2. Look for Medically Approved Toys

For your safety and peace of mind, choose sex toys that are medically certified. These toys often come with an expiry date, allowing you to replace them when necessary and keep your vagina safe and healthy.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s dive into the proper cleaning methods:

    Cleaning Your Sex Toys

Once you’ve identified the material of your sex toy, it’s time to find the right disinfectant to clean it. Here are a few guidelines to follow:

    1. Non-Motorized Silicone or Stainless Steel Toys: For toys made of silicone or stainless steel, you can use antibacterial soap. Simply lather the soap in your hands, apply it to the toy, and rinse it off with a damp tissue. Make sure to let it air dry completely.

    2. Non-Motorized Toys: If your toy doesn’t have any electronic components, you can clean it with hot water. Fill a clean bucket with hot water and add a few drops of disinfectant face wash. Let the toy soak for at least five to 10 minutes, then rinse it thoroughly with water. Finally, ensure it is completely dry before storing it.

    3. Cyberskin Toys: If you have a toy made from cyberskin, be cautious not to overclean it, as it may damage the texture. Use a mild wash and lukewarm water to clean these super-sensitive toys.

    4. Porous Toys: If you have porous toys, such as those made from materials like TPE or jelly, it’s advisable to use soap and a disinfectant to ensure a thorough clean.

Remember, just like using condoms during intercourse, using condoms while masturbating can also reduce the chances of developing vaginal infections from porous sex toys.

Taking proper care of your sex toys is not only essential for your pleasure but also for your long-term well-being. By maintaining good hygiene practices, you can enjoy the benefits of these toys without compromising your health. So, take some time to clean your sex toys thoroughly. Your body will thank you!
