Can’t do push-ups properly? Then blame these 6 culprits

By NCVC Staff | Published on Sep 22, 2023

Have you ever watched someone effortlessly bang out push-ups while you struggle to even attempt one? It’s frustrating, isn’t it? But fear not, we’re here to shed some light on the reasons behind your push-up woes and help you overcome them.

Push-ups are an outstanding exercise with numerous benefits. It’s a shame that many women shy away from them, either considering them too difficult or simply unaware of their incredible potential. If you’re eager to give push-ups a shot but find yourself unable to do so, the responsibility lies with you. But don’t worry, we’ve got your back. Let’s explore the six key factors that might be holding you back.

    1. You haven’t warmed up properly

Underestimating the importance of warming up is a common mistake in the fitness world. Warming up loosens your muscles, allowing for better performance and flexibility. Engaging in a strenuous exercise like push-ups with stiff muscles is a recipe for failure. A thorough 15 to 30 minutes warm-up is essential to prepare your body for the challenge ahead.

    2. Your body lacks essential nutrients

Without the proper fuel, your body won’t perform optimally. Weak muscles not only deplete your existing muscle mass but also make you more susceptible to injuries. Ensuring you consume enough proteins, fiber, good fats, and other healthy nutrients is crucial to strengthen your muscles. Only then can you conquer exercises like push-ups with ease.

    3. You neglect weightlifting

If you believe that lifting weights is a waste of time, you’re mistaken. Weightlifting improves muscle strength and sharpness, boosting your endurance and overall performance. It also reduces the risk of injury. Exercises targeting your legs, back, and shoulders are especially useful if you’re keen on mastering push-ups.

    4. You’re too tired

It might sound obvious, but tired muscles won’t cooperate, no matter how determined you are. Pushing yourself to the limit without giving your body a chance to rest and recover is counterproductive. Always remember to take a day off and allow your muscles to rejuvenate for optimal progress.

    5. You’re not executing proper technique

Posture and movement are paramount. No matter how much weight you lift or time you spend in the gym, incorrect technique will hinder your progress. When performing a push-up, ensure your palms are firmly placed on the ground at shoulder distance, engage your core, and maintain a straight midsection.

    6. You’re not paying attention to your breathing

Breathing is often overlooked, but it plays a vital role in your exercise routine. Correct breathing technique can make a world of difference and yield remarkable results. Proper inhalation and exhalation during exercise increase the oxygen levels in your body and elevate your heart rate, resulting in more calorie burn. Furthermore, increased oxygen in your bloodstream boosts your overall performance.

Remember, while doing push-ups, inhale as you lower your body and exhale as you lift yourself up. Give it a try and notice the difference it makes.

So, my friend, we’ve identified the possible reasons why you’ve been struggling with push-ups. Now it’s time to tackle them head-on. Address these issues, make the necessary adjustments, and soon enough, you’ll conquer the push-up like a pro.
