Are these weight-loss mistakes keeping you from achieving your dream bod?

By NCVC Staff | Published on Oct 11, 2023

They say that if you conspire for something to happen, the universe conspires with you. But what if the universe isn’t helping you much, even though you’re trying hard to shed some kilos? Well, perhaps you are making a few weight-loss mistakes that are keeping you from slimming down.

It’s time to educate ourselves and lose weight the right way. Celebrity nutritionist Nmami Agarwal shares three common diet mistakes that people make while endeavoring to lose weight. Let’s dive in and uncover the truth behind these misconceptions.

    1. Shedding fats from your diet won’t make you shed weight

It’s time to shed the belief that eating fats can make you fat. Contrary to popular belief, fats aren’t an optional choice but an important micronutrient. They are integral for your brain, heart, and gut health. Moreover, the glowing and supple skin that we all aspire to maintain? It’s all because of healthy fats. Yes, fats are actually good for you, ladies.

Interestingly, certain vitamins can only be absorbed by the body in the presence of fats. However, the choice of fats is crucial. You must refrain from having saturated fats like butter, margarine, hydrogenated oils, and trans fats.

So, what fats should you add to your diet? Consuming essential fatty acids found in fatty fish, walnuts, avocados, and eggs is all your body needs. And for all the vegetarians and vegans out there, walnuts provide the highest form of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, which are vital for many body functions.

    2. Fad diets don’t make good lifestyle choices

All those fad diets that claim to be the magical cure to your weight-loss woes? Well, they simply don’t work. The fact that they force you to follow extreme processes like starving yourself or relying on specific foods is a big problem. These diets often eliminate important food groups from your meals, such as carbs or fats, and rely on limited sources of energy.

Although they might give you short-term excitement with quick results, they remain unsustainable in the long run. Once you’re back to your normal eating habits, your weight bounces back, sometimes even more than before. These diets can cause serious damage to your metabolism, affecting your digestion and absorption in the long run.

What is the solution then? It’s time to return to and stick with a good old balanced diet that includes foods from every food group. Just master the art of portion control to ensure a healthy relationship with food.

    3. Extreme calorie restriction is a big no for weight loss

We’ve all been fed the belief that the fewer calories we eat, the faster our weight loss will be. But the reality is different. While you might experience initial weight loss, you may risk your overall health in the long run.

Extreme calorie restriction starves your body of the essential nutrition it needs. Furthermore, the restrictive mindset around food that often comes with it could give rise to food disorders, negatively impacting your mental health as well.

So what can actually help you lose weight? Stick to a simple, basic diet regime comprising of whole foods like grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and dairy. Combine this with regular physical activity to achieve sustainable and healthy weight loss.

It’s time to become conscious of these weight-loss mistakes and make informed choices that will support your journey to your dream body.
