2 things to do at night to reduce open pores

By NCVC Staff | Published on Sep 21, 2023

If you’ve been on the hunt for effective ways to minimize open pores, you’ve come to the right place. Open pores, those visible and eye-catching pores on your skin, can lead to various skin conditions such as acne, fine lines, and more. To understand how to treat and reduce open pores, we spoke to Dr. Monica Kapoor, a renowned cosmetologist and Director at the FLAWLESS Cosmetic clinic & ILACAD Institute.

What Causes Open Pores on the Skin?

The causes of open pores can vary, but genetics is the primary reason. If someone in your family has open pores, it’s likely that you have them too. Apart from genetics, excessive skincare product usage, acne, oily skin, and overexposure to the sun can also contribute to enlarged pores.

    1. Always Double Cleanse

Don’t underestimate the power of removing your makeup at night. Sleeping with makeup on is a skincare sin that can clog your pores with makeup, oil, and bacteria. To prevent this, adopt a double cleansing routine. Start with an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, followed by a water-based cleanser to deeply cleanse your skin.

Opt for a gel-based cleanser with ingredients like salicylic acid, niacinamide, or green tea. These ingredients help reduce oil secretion and make pores less visible. Avoid oil-based or alcohol-based cleansers as they can irritate your skin. Additionally, moisturizing cleansers may leave residue in your pores and increase oiliness. A gel-based cleanser will effectively clear oil from your pores, reducing their appearance.

    2. Say Hello to Aloe!

Aloe vera is a miracle worker when it comes to shrinking pores. Before bedtime, apply a thin layer of fresh aloe vera gel on your face. Gently massage it in circular motions and leave it on if you prefer not to apply any additional skincare products. Alternatively, wash it off after 10 to 15 minutes. You’ll notice your skin feeling refreshed and all the oil and dirt from your pores being removed without drying out your skin.

Additional Tips for Reducing Open Pores on the Nose and Cheeks:

    1. Opt for oil-free products: Choose oil-free and water-based products, including makeup products. These products are high in humectants, which are suitable for oily skin with open pores. Avoid oil-based products that contain petroleum or coconut oil, as they can further enlarge your pores.

    2. Always moisturize: Use an oil-free moisturizer to reduce pore enlargement. After washing and patting your skin dry, gently apply a moisturizer to hydrate and soften your skin. This allows the oil from your sebaceous glands to penetrate deeply, preventing clogged pores and reducing their appearance.

    3. Keep your skin clean: Wash your face twice a day with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. Avoid alcohol-based cleansers and use clean fingers to apply the cleanser. Remember to pat your face dry with a clean towel instead of rubbing it to remove dirt and excess oil from your pores.

    4. Exfoliate: Exfoliation is key to removing matter that can clog your pores. If you have oily skin, exfoliate once or twice a week to get rid of dirt, dead skin cells, and excess oil. However, be careful not to overdo it, as too much exfoliation can dry out your skin and make your pores appear larger.

    5. Apply clay masks: Treat yourself to a clay mask once or twice a week. These masks help absorb excess oil from your pores, preventing them from enlarging and making them less visible. Avoid overusing clay masks, as they can cause skin irritation and lead to blemishes.

    6. Use Retinol: Incorporate retinol into your skincare routine to control sebum production and increase collagen, which tightens pores.

    7. Never skip sunscreen: Sunscreen is a must-have for pore care. Regular sun exposure can dry out your skin and make your pores appear larger. Protect your skin by using sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

    8. Consider dermatologist treatments: If you’re seeking professional guidance, consult with a dermatologist for treatments such as micro-needling, gold plasma, neo facial, and erase or pixel-perfect laser therapy to reduce the size of your pores.

By following these nighttime rituals and incorporating these tips into your skincare routine, you can effectively reduce open pores and enjoy healthier, smoother skin. Remember, consistency is key, so stick to these habits to maintain a youthful and radiant complexion.
