10 super-cheap foods from your kitchen can help you lose weight

By NCVC Staff | Published on Sep 26, 2023

We Indians were just about fine with losing the extra kilos using food hacks passed on to us by our legendary grandmas and moms. Until food and health bloggers on social media and fancy supermarkets entered our lives and shook our faith in the good-old system.

Thanks to enticing foods like avocados, packed with healthy fats, nutrients, and well a hell-lot of an international “classy” feel, we forgot all about the weight-loss-causing capabilities of the local foods, easily available in every Indian household.

But now is the time to reignite the patriot in you, not just for the sake of loyalty to the country, but also for the amazing nutritional benefits and weight-loss aiding potential of Indian food items. Take a look at 10 of the most miraculous ones:

    1. Spinach The ever-humble palak in your kitchen is a green-leafy vegetable, low in calories and high in nutritional value. Packed with the goodness of vitamins, minerals, and fibre, spinach doesn’t just help you feel satiated easily, but also keeps water retention in check.

    2. Bottle gourd You can hate this green vegetable all you want, but you cannot ignore the many benefits of including ghiya/bottle gourd in your diet. The low-cal veggie is full of fibre and can help you curb hunger. That’s not all! Bottle gourd can even help you sleep better and you all know how quality sleep can fasten your metabolism and help you lose weight, right?

    3. Moong daal High on protein and fibre and low on calories, this lentil can keep you full, help in muscle repair and building, and can be a great weight-loss food option especially for vegetarians looking to up their protein intake.

    4. Tomatoes Several studies have emphasized on the fat and water retention fighting power of tomatoes. So don’t hesitate to relying on them if you’re trying to lose weight.

    5. Eggs Protein, protein, and pure protein in the egg whites with the goodness of some healthy fats in the yolk. What more do you need from a food item during a weight loss journey?

    6. Cucumbers Cucumber is just you eating water, if you know what I mean. This vegetable is high on water content and fibre and super-low on calories. Plus, it’s refreshing, cooling, and can help you control hunger pangs too.

    7. Nuts You need healthy fats to get rid of the stored fats in the body. What better way to get these than nuts like almonds, peanuts, and walnuts. And you get an extra dose of protein and fibre too. Win-win, I say.

    8. Spices From turmeric and cinnamon to jeera, ajwain, and black pepper—the metabolism-boosting powers of Indian spices are known to one and all. This is exactly why most dieticians and nutritionists ask you to boil them in water and have the water empty stomach.

    10. Garlic Well well, this one is a renowned natural appetite suppressant-cum-metabolism-booster. Plus, it’s good for your heart too.

Now that you know the benefits of these easily available kitchen ingredients, stop looking further and reap their weight-loss benefits instead.
