The National Center for Victims of Crime is a non-profit organization founded in 1985 and headquartered in Washington, DC.  We are the nation's most effective resource and advocacy center for victims of crime, giving voice to their needs.

The mission of the National Center for Victims of Crime is to forge a national commitment to help victims of crime rebuild their lives. We are dedicated to serving individuals, families and communities harmed by crime.

The National Center for Victims of Crime is actively seeking the following interns and volunteers for Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. (Unless otherwise noted below, interns and volunteers are not paid. If you are looking for paid employment, please visit our Employment page instead.)

Program Assistant Internship, National Crime Victim Bar Association

The National Center for Victims of Crime is the nation's leading resource and advocacy organization for victims of crime and is committed to helping them rebuild their lives.  We are seeking an unpaid Program Assistant intern to help with our National Crime Victim Bar Association.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with updating materials and web pages
  • Assist with planning of trainings
  • Assist with membership services

Requirements:

  • Junior or senior with interest in legal studies and/or victim issues
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills; web site/html experience preferred
  • Cooperative team work style

Marketing and Meeting Planner Internship


The National Center for Victims of Crime is the nation's leading resource and advocacy organization for victims of crime, and is committed to helping them rebuild their lives.  We are seeking a reliable college student interested in an unpaid internship in meeting planning at a non-profit organization, between 10-15 hours a week, flexible with start and end dates. The intern will work with the Meetings and Events Manager on our upcoming national conference, with over 800 attendees, scheduled for June 22-24, 2009 in Washington, DC.

Meeting Planning Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate speaker's presentations for conference CD;
  • Assist with dissemination of information to workshop speakers and facilitators;
  • Coordinate speaker and facilitator information for the program;
  • Process conference registrations;
  • Assist with supervision of on-site tasks; may supervise registration;
  • Assist with other meeting planning and  administrative duties as they occur.

Marketing Responsibilities:

  • Assist with procurement of conference amenities and supplies;
  • Assist with marketing research for conference attendees;
  • Design marketing materials, including e-mails and postcards;
  • Assist with marketing conference sponsorships to potential sponsors

 

Requirements:

  • Highly organized; Able to multi-task/manage time efficiently and effectively;
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Legal Internship - National Crime Victim Bar Association (an affiliate of the National Center)

National non-profit resource and advocacy center for victims of crime seeks a legal intern.

The National Center for Victims of Crime, the leading advocacy and resource center for victims of crime, is located in Washington, DC.  The intern reports to the Director of the National Crime Victim Bar Association (an affiliate of the National Center for Victims of Crime).

Responsibilities:

  • Summarizing and annotating reported opinions for the Civil Justice Database (a collection of over 11,000 reported opinions related to civil litigation arising out of criminal acts);
  • Handling phone calls from victims seeking referrals to attorneys.

Requirements:

  • Law school student (first or second year);
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Working knowledge of, or strong interest in, tort law issues.

    Public Policy Internship

    National non-profit resource and advocacy center for victims of crime seeks unpaid public policy intern.

    The Public Policy Division of the National Center for Victims of Crime promotes policies that advance the rights and interests of crime victims.  We are seeking someone with a quick mind, excellent organizational skills, a sense of humor and a "Can Do" attitude. This position reports to the Director of Public Policy.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Tracking federal legislation; 
    • Conducting research on the Web; 
    • Summarizing new reports and studies of interest to victim advocates; 
    • Helping to update policy information on the National Center's Web site;
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements:

    • College junior or senior; 
    • Proficiency in Word and ability to learn other computer programs;
    • Working knowledge of or strong interest in crime victim, criminal justice, or family law issues;
    • Strong research experience and excellent writing skills;
    • Ability to work 10 - 15 hrs. per week.

Legislative Internship

National non-profit resource and advocacy center for victims of crime seeks a legislative law intern.

The Public Policy Division of the National Center for Victims of Crime tracks all state and federal laws that relate to the rights and interests of victims of crime.  We use this information to provide technical assistance to policy makers and victim advocates at the state and federal level, draft model legislation, advise crime victims of their legal rights; educate the media and general public about the rights and interests of crime victims, and train those who work with victims of crime.  This position reports to the Director of Public Policy and provides an excellent opportunity for hands-on policy work.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Researching the real-world impact of statutes relating to crime victims rights,
    including court interpretation;
  • Developing comparative analysis of state laws affecting crime victims
  • Drafting written materials regarding current policy issues
  • Attending congressional hearings on legislation of interest to victims of crime;
  • Daily tracking of pending federal legislation affecting victims of crime.

Requirements:

  • Law school student (first or second year);
  • Proficiency in Word and ability to learn other computer programs;
  • Working knowledge of or strong interest in crime victim, criminal justice, or family law issues;
  • Ability to work at least 10 hrs. per week.

Victim Services Internship

National non-profit resource and advocacy center for victims of crime seeks a victim services intern.

Victim Services operates a national toll-free helpline for victims of crime seeking referrals and information.

Responsibilities:

  • Include researching victim services agencies across the country;
  • Gathering contact and service information by phone;
  • Maintaining existing database by creating new entries or updating existing ones.

Requirements:

  • Sensitivity to victims' issues;
  • Microsoft Access experience preferred;
  • Professional phone manner

VictimLaw Marketing/Development Internship

The National Center for Victims of Crime, the nation's leading crime victim resource and advocacy organization, is seeking a marketing intern for its VictimLaw database project.

The intern will assist in the development of a marketing plan to promote VictimLaw.info, a comprehensive, user-friendly, online database of federal, state, and tribal victims' rights laws and related case law.

The goal of VictimLaw is to provide easy access to the vast body of victims' rights legislation and case law to a wide variety of users, including crime victims, victim service providers, prosecutors, law enforcement professionals, judges, parole/probation professionals, private attorneys, policymakers, researchers, academics, and the public at large.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing a feasible, detailed marketing plan to promote VictimLaw.
  • Identifying potential sources of funding to maintain and expand the VictimLaw database.
  • Drafting letters of interest and other marketing materials.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Upper-level business undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Creativity and ability to meet the challenges of marketing in the non-profit world.
  • Well organized, detail-oriented, and ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, crime victims' or criminal justice issues.

VictimLaw Legal Internship

The National Center for Victims of Crime, the nation's leading crime victim resource and advocacy organization, is seeking an unpaid legal intern for its VictimLaw database project.  The intern will assist with the updating and maintenance of VictimLaw.info. a comprehensive, user-friendly online database of federal, state, and tribal victims' rights, laws and related case law.

  • Proficiency in use of Lexis-Nexis and other online legislative resources.
  • Well organized, detail-oriented, and ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of databases a plus.

    Membership Internship


    The National Center for Victims of Crime is the nation's leading resource and advocacy organization for victims of crime, and is committed to helping them rebuild their lives.  We are seeking an unpaid membership intern.

    Responsibilities:

    • Conduct online research for potential National Center members
    • Create potential member mail solicitation list
    • Fulfill outreach card and publication orders
    • Update Access database with outreach card order customer information
    • Update current member contact information
    • Prepare New Join Member packets
    • Prepare membership renewal invoices using Word mail merge
    • Handle incoming and outgoing mail
    • Assist with ongoing various membership enhancement projects (e.g., additional member benefits, membership category)

    Requirements:

    • Detail-oriented
    • Able to work with minimal supervision

        Communications Internship


        The National Center for Victims of Crime is the nation's leading resource and advocacy organization for victims of crime, and is committed to helping them rebuild their lives.  We are seeking an unpaid communications intern.

        Responsibilities:

        • Researching crime victim-related issues in the media
        • Responding to and tracking information and interview requests from the media
        • Assisting with news releases, website content, research, and other communication department duties

        Requirements:

        • Undergraduate or graduate student
        • Excellent writing and research skills
        • Available a minimum of 10 hours a week
        • Flexibility, professionalism, attention to detail and the ability to work with minimal supervision
